This year we are celebrating cultures in our school. We have a large number of Filipino students in our school and their culture has some great music and dances that we wanted to explore. On Day 3, a group of volunteer students are gathering to learn the art of the tinikling dance. You can read more about the dance and history by clicking here.
Tinikling is basically like jumping rope but you have to dance over and through the sticks. Tinikling is a bird that the farmers used to try and catch in bamboo traps. It was quick and fast. The sticks represent the traps and the dancers are the birds, hopping through the traps with speed and skill, avoiding being caught.
This dance requires concentration to keep a steady beat. One mis-step can lead to injury and so all dancers and stick players are required to practice their techniques at home in order to be ready for the dances.
We are going to attempt 2 songs, a traditional one and a modern one.
Traditional Tinikling Song
Traditional Tinikling Dance
Party Rock
Hi! I don't suppose you know of any 8 count traditional music that could work for tinikling? Our kids are struggling with the 6 count.
