A Day of Firsts!

Mrs. Lowe's class showing "One two scooby doo."  Are you ready Freddy?
Today was an exciting day for the Kindergartens in music.  We all got to play the barred instruments!  Today we were learning what it looks and sounds like to use these really cool instruments.

Reading is Music to our Ears

This month, Kinder to Grade 3 classes are using literature to inspire us, spark our imaginations, work as a team, explore sounds and create musical stories.

Congratulations to the Kindergartens on their performances at our "I Love to Read" assembly at the beginning of February.

Mrs. Grant's class performed "Pete the Cat - I Love My White Shoes" by Eric Litman.

Mrs. Lowe's class performed "When It Rains It Rains" by Bill Martin, Jr.

These are the 5 stories Room 11, 12, 17 and 18 have been exploring.  We look forward to sharing our performances with you in a few weeks.

Sea of Blue Singers

Congratulations to the fantabulous singers of Stevenson.  We had 83/165 of our choir students come out for Music Celebration at Sturgeon Creek United Church.  Thank you to the parent and teacher volunteers for helping us get ready to sing.  It was commented on how professional we looked in our spiffy uniforms.
Today the Grade 2/3 choirs got to view the singing videos of our songs and this is what said!

Our next 'event' is the Winnipeg Music Festival.  Bus forms will be coming home very shortly so please look for those.  We need them back ASAP.  More information is to come but families, mark your calendars for Monday, March 2 (Grade 4/5) (morning show) and Tuesday, March 3 (Grade 2/3) (afternoon show) at Westminster United Church.

Peter Pan Spectacular!

Congratulations to Bailey and Alexandra for your awesome work, dedication and performance in the SJASD Divisional Musical Theatre in January 2015.  The show was Disney's Peter Pan Jr. and the show was amazing.

Sound, Sound, Everywhere Sound!

Grade 4/5 students have been studying sound in their Science classes.  They have had a few classes now to explore the sounds of a variety of instruments in the music room including pitched and non-pitched.  In the following pictures, students are given a variety of instruments and ask to identify and sort various sounds according to their own criteria.  Can you guess how they sorted these?

Orff Aliens

Room 16 - Orff Aliens!
Room 14 playing the game

Our Grade 1 classes were working on mallet technique this week.  We can remove the bars using "crab" hands and "helicopter lifts."  We practiced waiting and listening to Ms. Rempel's directions by holding our mallets in "number one no fun" position and ready to play "one two scooby-doo."  We also have to remember to be careful around the instruments and walk around and not run.

Get your child to tell you about our instrument game: early in the morning at 8 o'clock...

Miss Mary Mack Fun!

Today our Grade 1 classes read, sang and learned a simple version of the hand-clapping game of Miss Mary Mack.  We have some Grade 1 experts here to show us our version:

Here is the version that is shown above in the music.

Check out this fun song and body percussion piece called "Bim Bam."  Can you keep the pattern?

Music Fills the .... Skype?

Madame Burdeniuk and her Assiniboine choir

Thanks to Madame Burdeniuk who skyped with our Grade 4/5 choir today at Stevenson.  She gave us 2 stars and a wish after we sang for her.  I (Ms. Rempel) got to 'sit' in on her choir rehearsal at Assiniboine today at lunch.  Way to go singers!  I was VERY impressed with your singing and hand-clapping parts in "Jump along Josie."

We look forward to sharing with other music classrooms around the Division as well as within our own school.  If you are an educator interested in skyping with a music classroom, please contact me on skype: "msrempelmusicroom"
