Yes I Can!

This week I attended several professional development workshops and one particular person that I am in awe of and appreciate with so much respect is Canadian musician, Alvin Law.  I think there are many lessons, for the young and old, that we can learn from and aspire to as we hear Alvin's story.

Alvin had a great honor to be the drummer for this amazing song, We're the Superhumans.  From this day on, no matter, the challenge or difficulty, we all need to adopt the "Yes, I can!" attitude.

Storytelling and Music

One of my favorite things to do is read stories and create mini dramas and music to them.  This past week the Grade 1/2 classes have been listening, acting, and playing to fun stories that connect us to the fall season.

Drums Alive

We've been learning about playing in a beat along to music.   We are using exercise balls on pails.  This program is for exercise and it's called Drums Alive, but a super great way to practice our music skills.  Here are a few of our favorite songs.

Where We ALL Belong

Welcome back to the 2017-2018 music room season!

This summer I got to play music with my 5 beautifully talented nieces at my family farm's 100th year anniversary.  It was a special moment and so grateful for our time together with family and friends, growing, learning, and connecting.  How did you get your music on this summer?

We are well into the month of September and everyone is super excited to be back and getting in our groove.  This summer I found a really great song written by Canadian children's musician, Raffi.  We are adopting it as our theme song for the year and a great reminder that in the circle of life, we all belong!  Celebrating our uniqueness, strengths, and passions.

WSO Kids 2017-2018 Concerts

Great season ahead of Sunday 2017-18 matinee shows for kids at the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.  Click on WSO Link for more information.

Summer's a Comin'

It's been another year of many amazing things discovered, wrestlings, and determination to learn in community and who we are as individuals.  We've discovered gifts and pressed through many trials.  As I say good-bye today to my Grade 5 kids, many of whom I have taught music to for the past 6 years, it is never without some tears as a mom and I shared today at the end of our assembly.  Amazing families, kids, teachers, and friends.  Thank you for letting me be there.  We've ridden the storms well and I hope that each of my students will take all the good that we've known and the heart aches and keep pressing forward and climb and shine.  Never give up!

Stand in the light and be seen as you are.

To my students moving on, we will miss you and wish you the best wherever you go.  Keep in touch!  To my returning musicians in 2017-2018, I'm ready to rock it with you!

Cup Song Pattern

POINTERS - Use your right hand to pick up cup and the sweep.  When you grab the 'bottom' it's with your left hand.

CHALLENGE - Once you've mastered this pattern, how can you do it with a partner.  Check out the other groups in the song.  How else are they making new routines?
