We Remember

Thank-you to students and staff for a very simple yet beautiful reminder at our Remembrance Day assembly this week of those who served in WWI and WWII and continue to maintain peace around the world.  Our choirs sang beautifully in remembrance of those who stand for peace, hope and love.  We shall remember.

Another Year...

Grade 5 girls singing and dancing.  I am sure gonna miss you!

This is my 9th year end at Stevenson.  It's been a really low key year and I've needed a break from all the business and events.  We've had some lovely moments this year and also learning to adjust to our split classes has been both joyful and challenging.  Split classes are always difficult in music as we often build on previous years, with certain music skills and concepts that are age appropriate.  This year there was a large gap in the span and a variety of abilities.  We want all students making music but also knowing and understanding concepts, communicating effectively and appropriately, and gaining proficiency in skills and confidence in individual and group tasks such as reading, writing, playing, performing, music listening/appreciation, and improvising.  This is an unending huge task and my students didn't disappoint as I saw many grow through failure and triumphs.

To my Grade 5s - thank you for the years of making music together.  I hope and pray that you continue to find nuggets of life and joy through music making experiences and will look back on your years of plays, choir, Orff, games, dances, solos, and drumming with fondness.  I look forward to seeing you in the future bands, choirs, and ever appreciating the vast colorful wonders of music throughout the rest of your lives.

See you at our final assembly at 10:00 a.m. in the Stevenson gym.

Have a wonderful summer and see you all in September!

Summer's a Comin'

It's been another year of many amazing things discovered, wrestlings, and determination to learn in community and who we are as individuals.  We've discovered gifts and pressed through many trials.  As I say good-bye today to my Grade 5 kids, many of whom I have taught music to for the past 6 years, it is never without some tears as a mom and I shared today at the end of our assembly.  Amazing families, kids, teachers, and friends.  Thank you for letting me be there.  We've ridden the storms well and I hope that each of my students will take all the good that we've known and the heart aches and keep pressing forward and climb and shine.  Never give up!

Stand in the light and be seen as you are.

To my students moving on, we will miss you and wish you the best wherever you go.  Keep in touch!  To my returning musicians in 2017-2018, I'm ready to rock it with you!

Sunday, 30 April 2017

Thousands of students, musicians, parents, and community members from Charlottetown to Vancouver will come together tomorrow to celebrate the 13th annual Music Monday to raise awareness for music education. Created by the Coalition for Music Education, Music Monday will bring the nation together for the simultaneous singing of the Music Monday anthem, Sing It Together, on Monday, May 1, 2017.

Honouring Canada 150, this year’s National Showcase Concert will take place in Ottawa with a free concert at the National Arts Centre hosted by MP Seamus O’Regan and opera singer Measha Brueggergosman. The event will be live-streamed at MusicMonday.ca from 12-1 pm EST (11-12 pm Winnipeg time).

Showcase Concert performances include a mass children’s choir, the Métis Fiddle Quartet, singer-songwriter Mimi O’Bonsawin, a harp and soprano duo, youth jazz and strings ensembles, and the Ottawa Junior Youth Orchestra. Songwriter Marc Jordan, musicians from the official Music Monday video, and the children’s choir will also lead the nationwide sing-along of Sing It Together.

Sing It Together was commissioned by the Coalition for Music Education and features Inuit throat singing, Métis fiddling, Indigenous drumming, and children’s choirs in celebration of Canadian diverse and vibrant musical heritage.

Events are scheduled in communities across Canada, and participants are encouraged to join the conversation using the hashtag #MMC2C2C.

Sing It Together

Coming soon - May 1, 2017!

Music Monday celebrates Canada 150 with a new anthem, commissioned by the Coalition for Music Education. The new anthem 'Sing It Together' is co-written by Juno-award winning songwriters Marc Jordan and Ian Thomas.   Check it out on the Music Monday website.

Focusing on the power of voices, Sing It Together asks us to sing for joy, for truth, for healing and for freedom. The recording and video feature Inuit throat singing, Métis fiddling, indigenous drumming, and children’s choirs in celebration of Canadian musical heritages. Creating Sing It Together was a journey of discovery and the songwriters encourage music makers to continue this discovery where music lives in their schools and communities.

The 2017 hash tags are #MMC2C2C in English and #LEMCAC in French.

Closing Time

Thank-you Stevenson for a great year of learning and growing.  We went out with a bang today at our final Celebration of Learning.  Thank-you to all my Grade 5s for your dedication, love of learning, perseverance, and zest.  We accomplished many things in our music careers together and I only pray that you will all step into new horizons with appreciation and love for the arts.  Happy summer!
