St. James Children's Choir on the Air!

So proud of one of our outstanding elementary music teachers in our division, Mrs. Neufeld, and this wonderful high caliber divisional children's choir.  We had one student from Stevenson representing last year.  Congratulations Hannah, the choir team, their director, and Ms. Amanda Hahn-Tomchuk, their amazing accompanist!  We are so lucky to have you here.

BORROWED FROM SJASD Website News
During the week of October 15, 2018, CBC Radio One featured the activities of the St. James neighbourhood. As part of their coverage, they featured the SJASD Divisional Children's Concert Choir. Director Heather Neufeld submitted a recording from the choir's performance at the Winnipeg Music Festival in March 2018. Below is the audio clip from the program that aired Thursday, October 18, 2018. (Picture from a 2018 performance in St. James-Assiniboia)

Another Year...

Grade 5 girls singing and dancing.  I am sure gonna miss you!

This is my 9th year end at Stevenson.  It's been a really low key year and I've needed a break from all the business and events.  We've had some lovely moments this year and also learning to adjust to our split classes has been both joyful and challenging.  Split classes are always difficult in music as we often build on previous years, with certain music skills and concepts that are age appropriate.  This year there was a large gap in the span and a variety of abilities.  We want all students making music but also knowing and understanding concepts, communicating effectively and appropriately, and gaining proficiency in skills and confidence in individual and group tasks such as reading, writing, playing, performing, music listening/appreciation, and improvising.  This is an unending huge task and my students didn't disappoint as I saw many grow through failure and triumphs.

To my Grade 5s - thank you for the years of making music together.  I hope and pray that you continue to find nuggets of life and joy through music making experiences and will look back on your years of plays, choir, Orff, games, dances, solos, and drumming with fondness.  I look forward to seeing you in the future bands, choirs, and ever appreciating the vast colorful wonders of music throughout the rest of your lives.

See you at our final assembly at 10:00 a.m. in the Stevenson gym.

Have a wonderful summer and see you all in September!

Shining Stars

Congratulations on the fantastic singing today by the Grade 2/3 choir at the 99th annual Winnipeg Music Festival.  I was so proud of these 100 kids for the effort they put in to do their best.  We received a silver medal today.

Why singing?

Singing is...
= a part of our cultural heritage
= a way of exploring the elements of music
=  a way of exploring the forms and styles of music
= a way of expressing musical ideas
= a way of sharing music with others
= providing an opportunity to use your personal instrument (voice)
= allowing students to vocally manipulate sound
= a way of making music together
= as an ensemble, creating a musical statement that could not be created by an individual
= allowing everyone to be an artist
= enabling students to gain confidence in the sound and feeling of their singing voice
= a special experience of communication between composer and the singer
= enabling students to take part in musical activities that can be enjoyed and esteemed for their own sake

Principal of Music Award

We are very proud to congratulate our principal, Jane Couch, on a very special award she has recently received.  Mr. Miller and myself nominated Ms. Couch for the Principal of Music Award for Western Canada, presented yearly by the Canadian Coalition for Music Education.  We are very pleased to announce that she was selected!  Ms. Couch was presented with this award by Eric Marshall, former SJSD Arts Coordinator and present member of the Coalition, at our Winter Concert.  She received a plaque and cash award to be put towards our music program.  Ms. Couch goes above and beyond her duties as principal in our school to support music at Stevenson-Britannia and in St. James-Assiniboia School Division.  Thank-you for all you do for our students and staff to inspire us to be music-makers.
